Choose Your First Product on TikTok Shop — 7 Criteria for Channels With No Sales

Your first product does not need to be the best — it needs to be the safest. 7 criteria Thai creators actually use, plus affiliate vs own-product comparison.

Choose Your First Product on TikTok Shop — 7 Criteria for Channels With No Sales

Most new creators spend 2-3 weeks deciding what to sell, choose wrong, fail to sell, and quit.

The problem is not the product — it is that your "first product" has a special job, different from products that come later. Pick wrong and the algorithm classifies your channel wrong. Fixing it takes 30-60 days.

This post gives 7 criteria you can apply in 10 minutes, with templates.

Why the first product matters more than you think

The TikTok algorithm uses your first 7-14 clips to classify your channel. If you sell something "expensive + niche too narrow + no reviews available", basket CTR stays low. The algorithm reads "this is not a commerce channel" and stops pushing you.

A safe first product teaches the algorithm that your channel is commerce. Once classified correctly, you can sell pricier items later.

7 criteria for the first product

1. Price 100-300 baht

This is the impulse-buy zone for Thai TikTok Shop. Buyers do not overthink, do not check Shopee for long, do not ask their parents first.

Below 100 baht — margin or commission too thin. Above 500 baht — buyers think too long and CTR drops.

2. Margin ≥ 30% (own product) or commission ≥ 10% (affiliate)

If you buy to resell: cost 100, sell 150, margin 33%. Workable. Below 20%, a single return eats several orders' profit.

For affiliate: commission rate is in the TikTok Shop affiliate dashboard. Pick ≥ 10% (some beauty categories pay 25%).

3. Real reviews you can reference on camera

The 2026 algorithm reads social-proof signals. If you say "this product sells well" with no evidence, it looks like an ad and retention drops.

Quick check: search the product name on TikTok. If ≥ 3 creators have made well-performing clips about it, you have proof. Reference them: "other creators reviewed this and said X".

4. Matches your declared niche

If your bio says beauty creator, your first product must be beauty. Do not sell "because the commission is high" from a gadget category — the audience gets confused, the algorithm gets confused, no sales.

If you have not set your niche yet, go back to "Start TikTok Shop from zero" first. Do not skip this step.

5. Comparable on Shopee / Lazada

Thai TikTok Shop buyers usually open Shopee to compare before buying. If your price is equal or better + free shipping, you win. If you are 20% more expensive, you lose.

Quick check: search the product on Shopee, look at the first 3 stores. If your price is within ±10% of the median, you are safe.

6. Fast shipping (TikTok Shop Mall / Choice)

TikTok Shop Mall / Choice = products with TikTok-guaranteed 2-3 day shipping. Conversion rates run 30-50% higher than standard listings.

For affiliate: pick only Mall/Choice products for your first 30 days. For own product: use TikTok Shop fulfillment if you can afford it.

7. Return-friendly

First-time TikTok Shop buyers fear losing money. "Free 7-day return" lowers the barrier a lot.

Most TikTok Shop listings have return policies already. Pick stores with low return rate (visible in the affiliate dashboard). For own product: start with items "ready to use out of the box", no assembly.

Affiliate vs your own product — which first?

Affiliate fits: creators not yet sure about niche, low budget, want to test many products

  • Pros: 0 baht to start, no inventory, change products instantly
  • Cons: commission 3-25%, low profit per order, if the store closes you switch

Own product fits: creators sure about what to sell, with 3,000-5,000 baht ready

  • Pros: 30-60% margin, your brand, scalable
  • Cons: capital + stock + risk if products do not move

For creators with no sales yet: start with affiliate for 30 days, prove the model works (≥ 5 orders/month), then invest in own product.

2 real-shape examples (from Thai creators)

Case A — new beauty creator

Started with affiliate. Sunscreen, TikTok Shop Mall, 189 baht, 18% commission, 34 baht margin per order.

First 15 clips: real-use reviews comparing to an 800-baht sunscreen she had used. 12 orders in 21 days, 408 baht profit.

Not huge — but proves the model works. Once the algorithm classified the channel as beauty-commerce, month 2 hit 50+ orders.

Case B — new gadget creator

Started with own product. USB-C adapter at 159 baht, cost 90, margin 69 baht. Stocked 50 units (4,500 baht).

14 clips: demos with MacBook, iPhone, TV. 8 orders in 30 days.

Slower than hoped, but break-even is at 65 orders. Months 2-3 hit it, started profiting.

Summary

A good first product = safe + fast + comparable. Not "the best" product.

Run the 7 criteria in 10 minutes. Pass all 7 → ready to sell. Fail 1-2 → still doable, careful. Fail 3+ → find another product.
